Q&A

What's the difference between laser, IPL, and microneedling?

All three stimulate skin renewal, but they work through different mechanisms and target different concerns.

Laser uses focused light energy at specific wavelengths to resurface the skin, address deeper pigmentation, and smooth texture.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) to target pigmentation, sun damage, redness, rosacea, and broken capillaries at the surface — it's especially effective for evening out skin tone.

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries that trigger the body's collagen response, making it ideal for textural concerns like acne scarring and enlarged pores.

Many clients benefit from a combination over time, and your esthetician will recommend the right approach based on your specific concerns.

What is Candela and why does it matter?

Candela is one of the most established and clinically validated names in aesthetic light-based technology, used by dermatologists and medical spas worldwide. Their laser and IPL devices are known for precision, safety across a wide range of skin tones, and consistent results backed by clinical research. Using Candela means you're getting treatments built on proven medical-grade technology rather than generic or off-brand equipment — a meaningful difference when you're investing in advanced skincare.

What skin concerns can these treatments address?

Together, our advanced treatments cover concerns that go beyond what topical products or standard facials can reach. Laser targets fine lines, deeper pigmentation, sun damage, and overall resurfacing. IPL addresses sun spots, age spots, redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, and uneven skin tone. Microneedling excels at acne scarring, enlarged pores, textural irregularities, and early signs of aging. During consultation, we'll identify which treatment — or combination — aligns with your goals.

Does it hurt?

Some sensation is normal, but all three treatments are managed for comfort. IPL feels like a quick snap or warm rubber band against the skin and is generally the most tolerable of the three — no numbing is required for most clients. Laser feels similar but slightly more intense depending on settings. We apply a topical numbing cream before treatment. For microneedling, we also apply a topical numbing cream before treatment, and most clients describe the sensation as a light prickling or vibration rather than pain. We prioritize your comfort throughout and adjust settings based on your tolerance.

How much downtime should I expect?

Downtime depends on the treatment.

IPL typically involves minimal recovery — skin may look slightly pink for a few hours, and pigmented spots will appear darker (like coffee grounds) for three to seven days before flaking away naturally.

Microneedling causes 24 to 48 hours of redness similar to a mild sunburn, with possible light flaking on days three to five.

Laser recovery varies: gentler resurfacing may leave skin pink for a day or two, while more intensive protocols can involve three to seven days of redness, peeling, or temporary darkening. We'll walk you through what to expect so you can schedule around social or work commitments.

When will I see results?

IPL results typically appear within one to two weeks as pigmented spots darken, flake off, and redness calms — many clients see visible improvement after a single session.

Microneedling and laser produce some immediate brightness within a week, but the most meaningful results develop over several weeks to months as new collagen forms. Most concerns respond best to a series of sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients see the best results from a series of three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. IPL for pigmentation often shows strong results in two to four sessions, while microneedling and laser for concerns like acne scarring or deep lines typically require the full series. Maintenance sessions every six to twelve months help preserve results long-term. We'll build a personalized plan during consultation.

Are these treatments safe for darker skin tones?

It depends on the treatment. Candela's lasers are engineered to be safe across a wide range of skin tones, including deeper complexions, with properly calibrated settings. IPL, however, is generally not recommended for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI) because the broad-spectrum light can't distinguish between unwanted pigmentation and natural melanin, increasing the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation.

Microneedling is safe for all skin tones because it doesn't use light or heat. During consultation, we'll assess your skin type and recommend only the treatments that are safe and effective for you.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Avoid sun exposure, tanning, and self-tanner for at least two weeks before treatment — this is critical for IPL and laser safety, and important for microneedling results. Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating acids five to seven days prior, and skip waxing or resurfacing treatments in the area for two weeks. Arrive with clean skin, and let us know about any recent injectables, medications (especially photosensitizing ones like certain antibiotics or acne medications), or changes to your skincare routine.

What should I do after treatment?

Treat your skin gently for the first week. Use only the post-treatment products we recommend, avoid active ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and acids until your skin has fully recovered, and skip workouts, saunas, and hot showers for 24 to 48 hours. For IPL, don't pick at darkened spots — let them flake off naturally. Most importantly, wear SPF 30 or higher every day — freshly treated skin is especially vulnerable to sun damage, and unprotected exposure can undo your results or cause new pigmentation. We'll send you home with detailed aftercare guidance.

Can I combine these treatments with each other or with other services?

Yes, strategically. Many clients alternate IPL and microneedling across a treatment plan to address both pigmentation and texture, or layer laser resurfacing with microneedling for comprehensive renewal. Between active sessions, HydraFacials are a great way to maintain hydration and glow without interrupting the collagen-building process. We don't recommend stacking multiple resurfacing treatments in the same visit unless specifically planned — your esthetician will sequence everything for maximum benefit without overloading your skin.

Can I get these treatments while pregnant or breastfeeding?

We don't perform laser, IPL, or microneedling treatments during pregnancy. While there's no definitive evidence of harm, the clinical data is limited and we err on the side of caution. Breastfeeding is generally considered safer for microneedling, but we recommend checking with your doctor first. IPL and laser are typically postponed until after breastfeeding. HydraFacials and gentler treatments are a great alternative during this period.
