Q&A
What is a head spa treatment?
A head spa is a therapeutic treatment that combines deep scalp cleansing, targeted massage, and nourishing care for the scalp and hair — think of it as a facial for your head. Originating in Japan and refined across Asia, head spa addresses the scalp as the foundation of healthy hair: when the scalp is clean, balanced, and well-circulated, hair grows stronger and looks visibly healthier. Our treatments use professional-grade products and specialized techniques to cleanse buildup, stimulate circulation, relieve tension, and restore scalp health in a deeply relaxing setting.
What happens during a head spa session?
Every session begins with a scalp analysis using a microscope camera, so your therapist can see exactly what's happening beneath the surface — oil balance, buildup, follicle health, and any areas of concern. From there, the treatment includes a warm cleanse, a thorough deep cleansing phase that removes buildup from the scalp and follicles, a targeted treatment for your specific concern (hydration, oil balance, hair loss prevention, or sensitivity), and an extended scalp, neck, and shoulder massage. Most sessions close with a blow-dry so you leave looking polished, not wet.
Who should get a head spa treatment?
Head spa benefits nearly everyone, but it's especially valuable if you're experiencing any of the following: oily or flaky scalp, product buildup, itchiness or sensitivity, thinning hair or early signs of hair loss, dull or lifeless hair, tension headaches, or high stress levels. It's also popular as a wellness ritual — many clients book regularly simply because it's one of the most relaxing treatments we offer, with benefits that extend well beyond the hair itself.
What's the difference between head spa and a regular salon wash?
A salon wash cleans your hair. A head spa treats your scalp. The techniques, products, time investment, and goals are fundamentally different. Salon washes focus on the hair and typically last a few minutes. Head spa sessions run 60 to 90 minutes and use clinical-grade products, specialized tools, and therapeutic massage techniques to address scalp health at the follicle level. You'll leave with cleaner hair too — but the real transformation is happening underneath.
Which head spa treatment should I choose?
We offer three options designed for different goals:
- Relaxing Head Spa (60 minutes) is our intro-level treatment — the perfect starting point if you're new to head spa, want a shorter session, or are booking primarily for stress relief and wellness. It includes the scalp analysis, cleansing, a calming treatment, and our signature scalp and neck massage.
- Intensive Scalp Detox (90 minutes) is designed for clients dealing with buildup, oiliness, flaking, congestion, or dullness. It goes deeper than the Relaxing Head Spa with a more thorough cleansing phase and detoxifying treatments that reset the scalp environment.
- Anti-Hair Loss Treatment (90 minutes) is built for clients experiencing thinning, shedding, or early signs of hair loss. It uses targeted serums, stimulation techniques, and follicle-focused care to support healthier hair growth and scalp circulation.
If you're unsure, our therapists will recommend the right one after your scalp analysis.
What's the difference between the Relaxing Head Spa and the Intensive Scalp Detox?
The Relaxing Head Spa (60 minutes) focuses on wellness, stress relief, and general scalp health — it's a lighter, shorter treatment that's perfect for maintenance or first-time clients.
The Intensive Scalp Detox (90 minutes) is a deeper, more clinical treatment specifically designed to address buildup, excess oil, flaking, and scalp congestion. If your scalp feels heavy, itchy, or coated, or if your hair looks dull despite regular washing, the Intensive Scalp Detox is the better choice.
Does the Anti-Hair Loss Treatment actually help with hair loss?
The Anti-Hair Loss Treatment isn't a medical treatment for hair loss, but it addresses several factors that support healthy hair growth: clean follicles free of buildup, improved blood circulation to the scalp, reduced inflammation, and targeted serums that nourish the follicle environment. For early-stage thinning or shedding related to stress, buildup, or poor scalp health, consistent sessions can produce visible improvement. For more advanced or medical hair loss (hormonal, genetic, or autoimmune), it works best as a complement to treatment from a dermatologist or trichologist, not a replacement.
How often should I get a head spa treatment?
For general maintenance and wellness with the Relaxing Head Spa, every three to four weeks is ideal.
If you're booking the Intensive Scalp Detox to address buildup or oiliness, a closer cadence of every two to three weeks for the first month or two often produces faster results, then transitions to monthly maintenance.
For the Anti-Hair Loss Treatment, consistency matters most — we typically recommend weekly or biweekly sessions for the first four to six weeks, followed by monthly maintenance to support ongoing results. Your therapist will build a schedule based on your scalp analysis.
Does it include blow-dry?
Yes. We finish every session with a proper blow-dry so you leave looking polished and ready to continue your day. Hair feels noticeably cleaner, lighter, and more voluminous after treatment. No dripping wet exits, no towel-wrapped walks home.
Is head spa suitable for colored or chemically treated hair?
Yes. Our products are safe for color-treated, chemically processed, and sensitized hair, and the deep cleansing can actually help color last longer by removing the buildup that dulls tone. Let your therapist know about your most recent color, keratin treatment, or chemical service so we can adjust products and techniques accordingly. If you've had a service within the past week, we may recommend waiting a few days before your first head spa.
Is head spa suitable for all hair types, including curly hair?
Head spa is safe and beneficial for most hair types and textures — straight, wavy, curly (through Type 3A, 3B, and 3C), fine, thick, and chemically treated. Curly hair often benefits significantly from regular head spa treatments: buildup from heavier styling products and oils can accumulate on the scalp over time, and deep cleansing helps restore a healthy scalp environment without stripping the hair. Our therapists will adjust cleansing techniques, product selection, and drying methods to protect your curl pattern, and we can diffuse, blow-dry, or let you air-dry at home based on your preference.
At this time, we're not equipped to properly care for Type 4 coily hair — we believe specialized textures deserve specialists, and we'd rather refer you to a stylist who can give your hair the dedicated expertise it deserves than offer a service that falls short. If you have recently had a chemical service, wear extensions, or have a protective style, let us know when booking so we can confirm the treatment is a good fit.
Can I get a head spa treatment while pregnant?
Yes, and many of our clients love it during pregnancy — it's a deeply relaxing, non-invasive treatment with no heat or aggressive ingredients. The Relaxing Head Spa is typically the best fit during pregnancy. For the Intensive Scalp Detox or Anti-Hair Loss Treatment, we may modify the product selection to ensure everything used is pregnancy-safe. Let your therapist know you're pregnant when booking so we can prepare accordingly.
Can I combine head spa with other SleekCare treatments?
Yes, and it's one of our most popular combinations. Pairing a facial or body massage with a head spa creates a true head-to-toe reset, and the timing works well because both treatments are deeply relaxing without being physically demanding on the skin. The 60-minute Relaxing Head Spa pairs especially well with facial appointments, while the 90-minute Intensive Scalp Detox or Anti-Hair Loss Treatment can be combined with longer facial services for a half-day experience. Ask about our multi-service options when booking.
